Have any of you guys ever had jumpers knee? Whats a good recovery strategy? The pain seems to abate a bit the day after a bike ride. Luckily I've found a cycling group ride for Tuesday and Thursday nights so I have the incentive to get out there and ride now!

In case you haven't seen it already.

Costs $15. Don't know if it's worth it to you. I was REALLY hoping Ben Greenfield had written a book on it ( :D ). Alas, he has only written on IT band issues and low back pain. Granted he did write this on home remedies for general joint pain.
Check out my race reports!

Wolverine, huh?.... Isn't that an Ultimate Fighter "Character" : )

anyway... I have found that rest and VERY light workout is about the only cure. and they say it'll take about 6 weeks to heal.. well, there went another summer. The good news is that "Summer of the Bike" is officially on! I plan on doing the Hotter'n Hell 100 this year1 anyone else going?

I had it back when I played a bunch of volleyball.

I thought it was because my quads were too tight, but it turned out my hamstring tendon attachments were causing my patella to migrate a bit too deep into my knee.

I did a combination of rest with non-weightbearing cardio, hamstring stretching/yoga and glucosamine-chondroitin. It cleared up after a couple weeks. Then I went back hardcore into volleyball and got a pelvic stress fracture. Oops. WAY longer journey than jumper's knee. That one took 8 months to heal.

The pain is at the top of the tendon connecting the kneecap to the shin. Apparently, adults usually get the separation at the top while teenagers get it at the bottom of the tendon.. its called Osgood-Schlatter in teenagers...

At first is was just a dull pain but with more running it got really bad. I stayed off it for about 3 weeks but when I started running again it came back within a few miles... so now I'm just swimming and doing really light cycling.

so I've started swimming much more because road cycling was too much stress. I still use the stationary bike at the gym now. Luckily, the new community center with indoor AND outdoor pools, freeweights, fitness classes and weight machines just opened less than 400m from my house! woo hoo!

I guess "Summer of the Bike" is officially a no go...again

why/how do you get injured so much?
don't take this the wrong way, but do you not listen to/get minor pains that aren't muscular in your training before you get these injuries?

I'm gonna say yes to your question.... I alway's think that the pain will go away. I think I got this while teaching my son to ride his bike... He had a habit of hitting the brakes suddenly every time he got scared so I was stopping hard a LOT....

I also think I just have bad genes.... I've always been injury prone. Even in HS track I got injured just about every year. I have decided to start ramping it up more slowly than I was so hopefully I can avoid these injuries in the future.

This is part of what the barefoot running is for... strengthening tendons.

Well good luck to you man, I hate seeing people not be able to train/race for any reason, whether it is injury or mcat but then again that is basically the same thing, right?

I went to the Podiatrist yesterday. She said that barefoot running is not a bad thing.... but is is for me.... I have hallux rigidus caused by Gout and severe overpronation.... barefoot running will cause other parts of my anatomy to compensate for the overpronation and get injured. She also said that the pain I feel between my 3rd and 4th toes is definitely a Mortons Neuroma. I asked what I can do to minimize joint damage and she suggested an orthotic. I have one concern with that though.

How can an orthotic at my heel solve a problem with hallux rigidus up at the big toe? I have been doing research online looking for rigid insoles that would prevent the big toe from flexing back too far.(I only have about 2/3 of the dorsiflexion that a normal person has.) I have found some that look ok but was wondering is you guys have any experience in this area. If you do a google search about turf toe inserts you can see what I've been looking at.

Thanks!
